In January 2021, we swapped our previous lives for a new adventure and moved to Primrose Smallholding. While we had plenty of enthusiasm, we quickly discovered that running a smallholding involved a lot more than simply opening gates and feeding animals!
Before bringing livestock onto the smallholding, we completed sheep and pig husbandry courses and began building our flock and herd. Like many new smallholders, we soon learned that animals have a way of keeping you humble. We spent hours chasing sheep around fields before discovering that a bucket of feed was far more effective than running after them. Our pigs regularly outsmarted us when it came to loading trailers, until we learned the value of pig boards, patience, and a few tricks from more experienced farmers.
Over the years we've chased escaped sheep, pigs and goats back into their paddocks, helped bring new lambs into the world, learned how to administer medicines and injections when animals needed treatment, and developed the confidence to handle all the day-to-day challenges that come with caring for livestock.
As the smallholding grew, so did our skills. We've learned to drive tractors, operate a JCB digger, use a variety of farm implements, and have somehow accumulated a collection of trailers along the way! We've repaired fences, dug drainage trenches, built enclosures, battled mud, and celebrated countless small victories that only fellow smallholders will truly understand.
Every challenge has taught us something new, and every animal has added its own character to life at Primrose. What started as a dream has become a way of life that we genuinely love sharing with our guests. We are still learning every day, but that's part of what makes smallholding life so rewarding.
Today, we're proud to offer visitors the chance to experience a real working smallholding, meet our animals, enjoy our daily feeding tours, and create memories in the beautiful Herefordshire countryside. Whether you're staying for a weekend or a longer break, we look forward to welcoming you to Primrose Smallholding and sharing a little of our adventure with you.
